Doris E. (Smith) Thurber

West Brookfield - Doris E. (Smith) Thurber, 91, of West Brookfield died on Saturday, February 27, 2021 at Quaboag Rehabilitation and Skilled Care Center.

She leaves three grandchildren, Renee Packard of Southbridge, Brandon Cass and his wife Beth of Barre and Jefferey Cass and his wife Brooke of West Brookfield; her six great-grandchildren, Cody Cass, Dylan Packard, Taylah Cass, Adalyn Cass, Garrett Cass, and Nora Cass; and her son-in-law, William Cass and his wife Betty of West Brookfield.  Doris was predeceased by the love of her life, Roger L. Thurber in 2019 and her daughter, Rhonda Cass in 2007.  She was born in Spencer, daughter of the late Norman  and Martha (Ellis) Smith.

Doris worked in the cafeteria at West Brookfield Elementary School for 30 years.  She was a “guardian angel” for the children, always making sure those with health issues or special dietary needs were well cared for.

Doris was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.  The greatest joys in her life were time spent with her grandchildren.  In her younger years she spent her time on the water at Lake Wickaboag, skiing and boating.  When she and Roger purchased their winter home in Florida, they settled at the Del Tura Country Club, where she spent many hours golfing.

A graveside service for Doris and Roger will be held in the Pine Grove Cemetery in West Brookfield in the Sping.  There are no calling hours.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the West Brookfield Rescue Squad, Inc., P.O. Box 540, West Brookfield, MA 01585.
